essential phone: Ex-Googler reportedly working on an Android smartphone that is designed to work on voice commands – Mobiles News

Ex-Googler and the ‘Father of Android’ Andy Rubin may have had a tough time last year facing a not-so-good response for the Essential Phone. He was even accused of sexual misconduct when working at Google, followed by him putting the company up for sale. But the plans of the Essential company launching a new smartphone is not dead yet. This time, some more details about the smartphone have been revealed by ‘people familiar with the matter’ in a Bloomberg report.

The firm is said to be sidelining other projects for now to focus on a single smartphone that is not your usual Android handset. It has even shelved plans to make a different handset and a smart speaker earlier this year for this, as reported.

This new Essential-branded phone is said to ‘mimic a user’ and will auto-respond to messages, cutting the amount of effort one has to make by to usually reply to any kind of message using a handset. It is said to have a small screen, indirectly stressing more on the usage of voice commands. In addition to texting on its own, the handset may be able to book appointments for you or send emails on your behalf.

Although Essential is yet to confirm any of the aforementioned speculations, Rubin did drop a hint about such a device last year in an interview with Bloomberg. “If I can get to the point where your phone is a virtual version of you, you can be off enjoying your life, having that dinner, without touching your phone, and you can trust your phone to do things on your behalf,” he stated. “I think I can solve part of the addictive behavior.”

This new AI-heavy handset could be Essential’s last attempt to make a mark in the market that is conquered by Samsung, Apple and others. The level of AI is not up to the mark and is something we can’t rely on completely. Essential plans to change that.
